What is isopropyl alcohol, and why is it used as a disinfectant?

This is written by someone at a company, but they did a great job explaining sanitizing alcohol solutions. If you can't wash your hands with soap and water, and can't find commercial hand sanitizers, I'd tell you to use everclear (it's 90+% ethanol), or 70% isopropyl alcohol. You could buy it, and distribute it into spray bottles.
